i have been busssssssssy at work, it's that time of year at harvard. also changing jobs, so lots going on the past month! i may write a more personal post about that soon. i experienced sensations about job stuff/change that i didn't think i would. ok, enough about that for now.

my son is with me this weekend so we are off to the beach today to lay like a lump and watch the waves. that's it! and some fun finds from around the world wide web:

my plans include staying cool (it's supposed to be hot and humid in the 90's this weekend), might take my first of the summer swims, i plan on eating an entire donut on sunday from my favorite donut shop, and possibly looking at a rescue dog (yes!). oh, and if you want a good suspense read for the beach, i just finished this while taking the train back and forth to work, sooooooo good. just saying!

cozy commercial spaces

i spoke with a number of people who went out to eat this past thanksgiving, and at some unusual places (one woman took her whole family to a chinese dumpling house!) and it got me thinking of where we choose to spend time and eat, to just be, with friends and family. what are we drawn to and why? when?

if i could design any "type" of space i would have to choose commercial spaces, they by far feel the most open and experimental as an initial blank canvas or stage, a chance to integrate wow pieces and a chance to get just a little bit daring...

i found these commercial spaces cozy & serene today. spaces that i could easily spend a holiday meal while taking in what the designer(s) accomplished, what he or she was hoping to convey or instill in you as you spend precious moments there. i love that...enjoy!

happy august! & workstead lighting

i'm loving this lighting find this monday, (and the name!) workstead...
founded in 2009 by stefanie brechbuehler and robert highsmith, workstead bases themselves between brooklyn new york and charleston south carolina focusing on "architectural and interior design, lighting, furniture and exhibitions."(see many of their impressive projects and commercial accomplishments here) but it is their brass lights that have captured my attention today.

as workstead describes their palette as "strong and rich, yet simple and efficient" i might also add in elegant here. there is something special about the lovely design of their brass lighting line, a rather sensual dance that is performed and accomplished between material and form, a keen understanding of each other's role in the overall design. and there are those times, as designers and artists, when we consider the work of our contemporaries, such as the lighting line that workstead is designing and producing and we say to ourselves, they've absolutely nailed it. in every way. this, for me, is one of those times. i love that! enjoy...

i've been slowing it down this week, reading, sewing, getting outside, ALOT. trying to suck up these summer days/moments in every way imaginable. sometimes you have to force yourself to live slowly, to look around you, to smell the outdoors, to feel things that you sometimes take for granted. that's been my goal this week. yeah!

i'm almost finished with this book, so good! this intrigues me too and might be my next summer read. what are you reading these days? i'd love to hear! in between sipping rosé wine this weekend, i might check out some of these podcasts. have you become a podcast junkie? i bet it's easy to once you find some gems?

commercial spaces to love

designing for commercial spaces is admittedly my favorite. researching unusual materials & architects and the ways in which you can get slightly more daring and inventive when designing commercial spaces. there is something wildly freeing about commercial space design (at least to me!). the australian-based on line design publication yellowtrace is a go-to source for commercial design inspiration...

i've selected a few recent favorites, commercial spaces from inside australia and from other select locations around the world. what has drawn me in particular to these spaces is the use of texture, of creating texture, or exposing existing raw texture or the addition of unexpected materials. then of course there is the selection of out of the ordinary product (lighting, seating etc. ) and color palette choices.

these are spaces i could spend time in today. lots of time. enjoy!
