38 & bocci.

38 is this amazing sprawling chandelier. bocci is the company who offers it. stunning is what they are combined...
bocci is based out of vancouver canada with a satellite space in berlin germany. bocci is about glass blowing, glass casting, ceramics & metal sand casting and creating original and provocative design in a cooperative community of designers.

bocci states that "even though our pieces focus on the more emotional, irrational and romantic shades of the contemporary design spectrum, we are deeply committed to rigorous and intelligent execution." this particular line which bocci titles "38" is one of my favorites. each sphere is hand-blow but during the process leaves many white cavities haphazardly throughout the glass, some deep enough to house the lighting component, some deep enough to house earth and plants. so fun!

my mind went nuts while viewing these. it went from indoor to outdoor installations. i see them in both residential and commercial spaces. they are dreamy, romantic, special and unique. they certainly set or evoke a particular mood or stance. enjoy!

frank stella & line.

he's not young, frank stella, but his artwork is fresh & completely timeless...
frank was born in my home state of massachusetts and later made his home and still lives, in new york. the MoMA describes frank as not only a painter and printmaker, which he was, (a sculptor too) but also as an innovator and "often confounding his peers."

frank had "no interest in representational painting." according to MoMA, frank "insisted on the development of an overall surface through negating any illusionism that visible brushstrokes or advancing and receding colors might imply."

the interlocking geometric shapes, bordered and bound by recognizable bands are mesmerizing. the relationships which frank builds between pattern, color, and form are perfection. though his works seem simple, there is much to notice and talk about, in length actually. if you'd like to read more of MoMA's history about frank stella, head here. and a great new york times article about frank's black paintings here. and how frank stella "continues to provoke," here. enjoy!

fur fruits.

okay, so maybe these are dolce & gabbana fur fruit key chains. and maybe they are almost $400 bucks each. but they sure are sweet for summer...
and i have to say, i'm not much of a key chain kind of girl. key chains, at least to me, have always seemed weighty and clunky and just not my style. but these fruits are light and bright and fun. and yes (veeeeeery) expensive key chains, but still fun. enjoy!

friday & a road trip.

happy friday friends! i'm taking a short (just overnight) road trip with my son to check out good music (him, here), eat a delicious dinner, and stay in a (one of the few places open this time of year!) hotel, here.
(via)
i'd like to say that we'll have the windows down, the sun on our faces and the breeze in our hair. but the winter continues, snowing about 12 inches again here yesterday. so what do you do when it's the doldrums of winter? head to an equally wintry place and listen to some music. so we are.

i hope that you are planning something fun for this weekend too! enjoy!

uhuru.

in 2004, rhode island school of design graduates jason horvath and bill hilgendorf founded uhuru (ooh-HOO-roo). uhuru is a brooklyn new york based "multidisciplinary design studio merging avant-garde design with a commitment to environmental sustainability." that's in their words. plus they have the most amazing furniture. that's in my words...
i could go on to describe jason & bill's process, how they conceive of their designs and what uhuru means to them, but they say it better. have a listen...

enjoy!

pattern(y) things.

from wall treatments, to jewelry, to rugs, and other fixtures of fancy, some objects with pattern i'm coveting lately...
(1,2,3,4,5,6)
there are so many ways to incorporate texture into your environments, whether they be residential or commercial. and for me, textures is interesting, it adds interest to spaces, a particular flair or immediate sensation to spaces, (or your body through jewelry!), however large or small you want that sensation to be. enjoy!

bent wood jumper.

i have to say, for some reason i'm not really an air plant person, but these orange bent wood "jumper" plant stands offered up by 11 main are eye catching...
kind of cool for desktops, window sills or other small nooks and crannies you have. that are in need of cool bent wood planters. right? enjoy!

go bold or go home.

timorous beasties is the name of this company. this is their wallcovering line. and they are NOT messing around...
it all began in 1990, timorous beasties was formed by alistair mcauley & paul simmons, fellow textile designers at the glasgow school of art. and timorous beasties offers a just as provocative line of frabrics as well (graffiti stripe velvet?!), but the wallcovers, and maybe because typically they would be applied on a larger scale, have my attention today.

and if you really read the approach that ali and paul take, how they have studied the time-honored and classic wallpaper lines and patterns, techniques and materials, you can see how, not only do they have a reverence for such and art and for what has worked, but that they have dared to take all of that, a step further. or a giant leap further, depending on how you see it. enjoy!

the apartment.

ok, so i seemed to have hit the holy grail in vintage lighting, oh, and furniture too...
the apartment, based in denmark (don't panic, they ship world-wide!) showcases pieces that quite literally deserve a stage. they describe themselves in this way: "a liaison of 20th century furniture, contemporary art & design, showcased in the elegant setting of an 18th century apartment in the heart of copenhagen." ok, so let's start with that...

and while the furniture had me leaning in closer to the computer screen, it is the lighting the apartment offers that blew me away. i mean really, a 1960's pink murano glass chandelier?! what!? so, yeah, there's that kind of thing in the apartment. these were a few of my extreme favorites (did you see that brass cabinet?!) if i were shopping for a client tomorrow (ahem, or myself). but i could really have gone on, and on, and on...enjoy!
