it's friday, the weekend is straight ahead in front of you...what are you up to? anything fun? i'm craving fish tacos, rose wine and reading outdoors in the sun. i've been embroidering (almost finished with my first attempt at it) and will share it on instagram when i am finished! i also just bought the sweetest small canvas and hope to begin to paint it this weekend too. something about the summer weather has brought a whole bunch of creativity out in me. but it feels good!

muller van severen.

what happens when two talented designers who are also photographers who are also artists who are also sculptors get together? this...

fien muller and hannes van severen are who make up muller van severen. and the minute i laid my eyes on their line of furniture, i was captivated by the very playground nature of how they put together shape, line & color.

fien and muller take familiar shapes and entangle them into fun forms, their seating line is designed to prompt conversation or an "evolution of ideas" with its sometimes double facing trajectory. both fien and muller each have their own sites as well, be sure to visit them as they are unique unto themselves. but collaboratively and very creatively, they are muller van severen. enjoy!

if i were a teacher.

i'd have the coolest room...

and these shelves/storage spaces, offered up by cubit would present a cool wall treatment while keeping in mind, space, utility, and all at the same time, entering tons and tons of inspiring color into the room.

so many times, when entering into classrooms either ourselves or with our children, one notices the lack of doing things differently, of spicing it up, of getting the children to consider so many things (including the space that they spend alot of their day in by the way), differently. just saying...enjoy!

getting all kinds of modular.

it's funny that i post alot about cutting~edge design, modern takes on classic creations alot of the time. after all, this is avant garde design. what's funny is that truth be told, i am a vintage, gently worn furniture (even clothing!) kind of girl. i love pieces with a past, a history, a story to tell. they to me, are the most interesting...

but lately i'm feeling this sort of pre~spring cleaning~esque feeling coming over me. i'm organizing. everything really. so at times, pieces like these offered up by qubing pull me in and say hey...it's ok to have one uber modern piece. a piece that is willing to hold, store, prop up or conceal anything and everything. sometimes you just want clean lines. you know? just saying...enjoy!

side furniture.

this afternoon, i really like this sort of floating, wall mounted storage shelving which thonet offers up and labels as "side furniture."

it's a tubular, steel rack which houses covered coat hooks helping to keep its clean and linear look. a really great idea/piece for an entryway or laundry room or a child's room...or just about anywhere you need to stow things. plus, it just looks good. bonus! enjoy!

how amazing first of all is this multicolored, architecturally abstract bookshelf? and you know what it makes me think i do, mistakenly? build one. ;)

yeah that's right. i look at something like this, this wall treatment/storage idea/my mind goes racing imagining what i can fill those square and rectangular spaces piece of furniture, and i think huh...i could probably build it, i could get out tools and draw this thing up and do it my own way. and then i remember. i have no tools. i would buy all of the wood necessary and while i could certainly paint this beauty, my let's shall we say, my building skills, stand somewhere in the negative.

on a more slightly serious note, couldn't you go mad filling these shelves, with sculpture, books, lighting, photos, gadgets and cool finds from your life? me too. enjoy!

yesterday i featured a really fabulous do~it~your~own~way honeycomb book shelf, wall treatment idea. i also love this x shaped book/storage shelf idea. it's amazing how utilizing natural or simple every day shapes can transform the very space you think needs a transformation.

honeycomb shelves & happy friday!

ok, so, while i'm seemingly into do~it~yourself~ideas this week, why not another? and why not for a fabulous friday, right? maybe stimulating you for a fun weekend project? the blog, a beautiful mess (cool name too!) featured this honeycomb shelf make it yourself post this summer. i love it. i want it.

oh, and think about the possibilities...you can paint the wood instead of leaving it natural or stained. you could add hints of neon, inside the honeycomb cell maybe? or directly applied to the edges for a more subtle pop? you could really have some serious fun building these...and filling them ;)

hey, hey for friday! what are you up to? do you have fabulous plans? i'd love to hear! i'm working (alot) this weekend, but,in between, i'm looking for this kind of action: a run outside, in the fall sun, red wine at night, reading until i fall asleep, and sleeping well. enjoy!

miniforms.

the beautiful italian company miniforms started out designing small tables, in 1962. now, working with avant garde, young italian designers, miniforms has evolved into the design of chairs, larger tables & bookcases. another thing i love about miniforms besides the designs?

the fact that they, being avant garde and all, utilize an array of interesting and daring materials, such as aluminum, glass, & sheet metal. i love designers that aren't afraid to incorporate unusual/textural materials in their pieces. because after all, that only makes it a more fabulous design world, chock full of amazing options...here are a few of my favorite miniform pieces...

favorite new shelving ideas.

it seems so industrial or even boring to talk about shelving or storage space ideas. but let me change that for you. i've rounded up some fab new favorites, from different designers, different companies and styles to be sure. but all very non~boring my friends! promise. have a look...

this particular shelving design is one of my new favorites. designed and offered up by j1 studio, the functional yet sculptural quality is beyond attractive.

jagged, disjointed, interesting and all on purpose are these shelves found over at chris ruhe's studio.

now this is the epitomy of doing things differently, especially when it comes to shelving or storage ideas. have a small space to fill or a small space in general? how about hanging your shelving? up? like i said, doing it differently. these floating shelves are offered up by adrien de melo studio.

the herky~jerky motion of this fun modular shelf space, offered up by kompott is fabulous because you can configure it just about any way/shape/form your little heart desires.

i am really drawn to the simplicity & the medium of these framed shelves offered up by presse citron. lacquered steel and perfectly ready to frame your favorite objects d'art no?

and lastly, i'm also saving as one of my new favorites, the moroccan magic of these brilliantly beautiful shelves designed and offered up by younes design. i could stare at these for hours.

so, what do you think? are you drawn to any of these unusual/unique designs? and if so, which ones? i'd love to hear. the top and bottom are my favorites. and by that i mean that i can most certainly see one of them in my home, and for the long term. easily too! enjoy..

sinuous waves of glass.

in general, personally and design~wise, i have to admit, and i have in the past, that i'm not a giant fan of utilizing the medium of glass, specifically when it comes to furniture. i once had an injury from glass (in a fine arts course in college of all places) and that's a story for another time, but, and perhaps because of that, as a medium, glass has not always been my favorite. a big "but" here: these trapezoidal glass shelves, offered up by sovet, with their sinuous waves, with their open sides and ends, have me looking at glass just a little bit differently this tuesday morning.

there is something so un~invasive about this shelving. it exists quietly in the environment which it is placed, standing behind everything else placed on it or near it. yet the quietness of them is what makes them stand out. what makes them shine. it's what is making these large pieces of glass seem not quite so ominous to me this morning. i love that! enjoy...
