there's a woman making rugs.

dwell has introduced another company and woman i must share with you. her name is nani marquina and she and her company make the most exquisite hand made rugs i've seen in a while. while visiting her site make sure you take time to view the video (her website is fabulous as well), it's short, no words or talking, the video just shows us simply... how by hand people in india, where her production space is located, are hand dying, on their knees, hand tufting, cutting and trimming masterpieces. she shows us the looms moving, spinning wheels spinning, hands and fingers flying as fast as lightning... and did i mention this is by hand? you witness no modern day equipment to speak of except computers where they are touching up the design for each rug. no sweat shop production here, they are back to basics, creating art and turning it into a rug, with hands, with desire, in a natural environment and with pride. each piece is one of a kind.
from flying carpet rugs, shown above, to whimsical rugs for children to "grown up" rugs and many in between, there is a style to fit any home whether your home is traditional, modern or somewhere in between! after watching how these rugs are made and having one arrive at my little house i would covet this rug and remember that many hands touched this, wove the design in, trimmed loose threads and smiled when they were finished. i'd be smiling too.
